Location: Onsite at CARTA Headquarters
Expected Duration: Long term part-time (no more than 29 hours per week) depending on needs of the organization and availability of the candidate.
Position Summary:
CARTA is seeking a motivated and creative Communications Intern with strong graphic design skills to join our small but dynamic communications team. This internship offers hands-on experience in public sector communications, community engagement, and transportation advocacy. The ideal candidate is passionate about public service, skilled in digital communications, and eager to help promote public transportation as a vital community resource.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist in developing content for CARTA’s social media platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn
- Create compelling graphics, infographics, and visual content for digital and print materials, including social media posts, flyers, brochures, and promotional materials to inform riders and the community about service updates, events, and initiatives
- Support community outreach efforts and assist with public engagement events
- Monitor and respond to customer inquiries and comments on social media channels
- Assist in photographing and videoing transit operations, facilities, and community events for marketing materials
- Conduct research on transit communications best practices and emerging trends
- Help track media coverage and compile communications metrics reports
- Support the development of rider education materials and transit promotion campaigns
- Assist with internal communications to keep staff informed and engaged
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
Education:
- Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a college or university program in Communication, Public Relations, Marketing, Journalism or related field.
Knowledge & Skills:
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Proficiency in social media platforms and content management systems
- Graphic design skills (Adobe Creative Suite)
- Photography and/or video editing experience a plus
- Detail-oriented with strong organizational and time management skills
- Ability to work both independently and collaboratively
- Interest in public transportation, urban planning, or public service
- Reliable transportation and valid driver’s license preferred

Work Location & Compensation
Location: On-site at CARTA headquarters in Chattanooga, TN
Salary: $17.00/hr.
Schedule:
- Part-time, up to 29 hours per week during the academic year; Schedule is flexible and can be adjusted to accommodate class schedules.
