Rate of Pay: $17.00 / Hour
Location: Chattanooga, Tennessee
Expected Duration: To be determined based on need and availability of candidate. Part-time work (no more than 29 hours per week). Anticipation of three-six months depending on needs of the organization and availability of the candidate.
Position Summary:
The Human Resources Intern will support the daily operations of the Human Resources Department at CARTA by assisting with recruitment, onboarding, employee relations, records management, and HR compliance initiatives. This internship provides hands-on experience in a public transit environment and exposure to HR practices within a quasi-governmental organization.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist with recruitment efforts, including posting job openings, screening applications, and scheduling interviews
- Support onboarding processes, including new hire paperwork, orientation preparation, and employee file setup
- Maintain and organize employee records in compliance with applicable federal, state, and local regulations
- Assist with HR data entry and reporting in HRIS systems
- Provide support for employee engagement initiatives, training programs, and HR events
- Respond to routine employee inquiries and direct questions to appropriate HR staff
- Assist with benefits administration tasks such as enrollment tracking and communications
- Support special HR projects, audits as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Currently enrolled in an accredited college or university pursuing a degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, Public Administration, or related field
- Strong organizational and time management skills
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
- Ability to handle sensitive and confidential information with professionalism
Preferred Qualifications:
- Junior or Senior standing
- Prior internship or administrative experience
- Interest in public sector or transportation industry HR
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Basic understanding of HR principles and employment laws
- Attention to detail and accuracy
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Strong interpersonal skills and customer service orientation
- Willingness to learn and take initiative
Working Conditions:
- Office environment with occasional exposure to operational departments
- May require sitting for extended periods and working on a computer
- Flexible schedule based on academic requirements (up to 29 hours per week)
