Summary:
The Diesel Mechanic is responsible for the maintenance, repair, and overhaul of diesel-powered buses to ensure safe and efficient operation. This role involves diagnosing mechanical issues, performing preventive maintenance, conducting inspections, and utilizing computer-aided diagnostic equipment. The Diesel Mechanic must have a strong understanding of diesel engine systems, vehicle components, and safety regulations while maintaining accurate records and ensuring compliance with state and federal guidelines.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Other duties may be assigned that are in keeping with the goals and objectives of CARTA.
- Diagnostics and Repairs:
- Overhaul and repair diesel-powered buses, including disassembly, diagnosis, and reassembly.
- Utilize computer-aided diagnostic equipment to identify and troubleshoot mechanical issues.
- Operate precision instruments and gauges to check clearances and ensure proper functionality.
- Inspect and repair brake systems, steering mechanisms, wheel bearings, and other critical vehicle components.
- Test drive buses to diagnose malfunctions and verify successful repairs.
- Repair and adjust seats, doors, and install or repair vehicle accessories.
- Preventive Maintenance and Inspections:
- Perform routine preventive maintenance and inspections to ensure safe and efficient vehicle operation.
- Conduct required state inspections and comply with all federal, state, county, and local regulations.
- Maintain work records, including time and material logs for transportation equipment and vehicle servicing.
- Tools and Equipment Management:
- Use hand tools, pneumatic tools, power tools, hoists, grinders, lathes, welding equipment, and other shop tools.
- Maintain shop equipment, tools, and overall shop cleanliness to ensure a safe and organized work environment.
- Safety and Compliance:
- Ensure all work is completed safely, neatly, and with minimal supervision.
- Follow safety procedures and guidelines while handling repairs and maintenance tasks.
Qualifications:
Education:
- High school diploma or GED required.
- Vocational or technical training in diesel mechanics preferred.
Experience:
- Previous experience in diesel engine repair and maintenance, preferably with buses or heavy-duty vehicles.
- Experience using diagnostic software and precision instruments for troubleshooting.
Skills:
- Strong knowledge of diesel engine systems, disassembly, diagnosis, and reassembly.
- Proficiency in operating computer-aided diagnostic equipment.
- Ability to use a variety of hand tools, pneumatic tools, and power equipment.
- Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills.
- Attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to periodically pass the Department of Transportation physical examination.
- Obtain a Commercial Driver License (minimum class B) with a Passenger endorsement.
- Physical ability to lift and move various equipment, tools, and supplies.
