Diesel Mechanic
Department: Maintenance
Reports To: Maintenance Foreman
Rate of Pay: $28.20
SUMMARY
Diagnose problems, repair and perform general maintenance and servicing of all equipment and vehicles including adjustment of engines, transmissions, differentials, hydraulics, electrical systems; tune up engines, ignition parts, perform minor body repair; respond to road calls.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Other duties may be assigned that are in keeping with the goals and objectives of CARTA.
- Ability to overhaul/repair any and all diesel-powered buses.
- Operate precision instruments or gauges in checking clearances.
- Use of computers and computer-aided diagnostic equipment.
- Must have good knowledge of disassembly, diagnosis and reassembly.
- Inspect brake systems, steering mechanisms, wheel bearings, and other important parts to ensure that they are in proper operating condition.
- Test drive buses to diagnose malfunctions or to ensure that they are working properly.
- Repair and adjust seats, doors, and install and repair accessories.
- Perform preventive maintenance and make inspections of vehicles for proper working order and safe operation.
- Perform required state inspections; comply with all federal, state, county, and local regulations.
- Maintain work records, time and material records on transportation equipment and vehicles.
- Use of wrenches, screwdrivers, pliers, hoists, grinders, lathes and welding equipment as well as pneumatic and power tools.
- Maintain shop equipment, tools, and shop area.
- All work must be done in a safe, neat and quality manner with minimal supervision.
SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE:
- Knowledge of welding practices and techniques.
- Knowledge of diesel and gasoline powered engines.
- Knowledge of routine vehicular maintenance.
- knowledge of hydraulic and pneumatic systems in general.
- Skilled in reading and interpreting technical information
- Skilled in making mechanical adjustments and repairs
QUALIFICATIONS
- Obtain a Commercial Driver License (minimum class B) with a Passenger endorsement.
- Physical ability to lift and move various equipment, tools, and supplies.
- Ability to periodically pass the Department of Transportation physical examination conducted by the company physician.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
Education equivalent to completion of high school plus experience in the Diesel Mechanic Helper classification; or Diesel/Automotive certification.
